Boot system
Boot system
build-uefi-live.sh stages a portable x86-64 UEFI live system on the Astrology TN Analyzer drive. It installs a removable-media UEFI loader at EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI, a generic Ubuntu kernel, its full module set, and hardware firmware. The live Linux root is read-only and chart/report work is temporary in RAM. Set the FAT32 label to ASTROLOGYTN, shortened to fit FAT's 11-character label limit. The loader also recognizes the previous BW label during the rename transition. The GRUB menu and application folder use the full name. Early boot loads drivers matching detected PCI/USB hardware, checks candidate disks read-only, and remounts only the recognized drive writable. If the drive or live image is temporarily unavailable, it prints a status message and retries instead of dropping into an emergency shell. Optional network failures continue into offline analyzer mode. The drive data volume is writable so the analyzer can add confirmed Sesame object names to its persistent vault extension. The current volume was not repartitioned, and actual firmware boot has not been re-tested after the recovery change.
On the HP, use the startup menu (Esc, then F9) and select the UEFI USB entry. The default GRUB entry uses nomodeset with verbose kernel and EFI framebuffer console output to diagnose black-screen handoffs; select the standard-graphics entry if the first entry remains blank. update-uefi-loader.sh refreshes only GRUB without rebuilding the large live image. The keyboard-only connection menu offers Network (default: try wired Ethernet, then Wi-Fi), USB tether, or None (offline). Network mode does not require a phone or USB cable. USB tether mode is specifically for a phone Personal Hotspot over USB; PAN is not included. It loads hardware drivers by detected PCI and USB device IDs, so it can use the machine's RAM and supported hardware without the machine's installed operating system.
Compatibility limits
- The current build target is x86-64 UEFI. It is intended for a broad range of UEFI PCs, not literally every computer. Hardware must have a driver in the included kernel and firmware set; 4 GB RAM is recommended.
- Secure Boot must be disabled unless the firmware accepts the unsigned removable-media loader. The HP used to prepare this drive currently has Secure Boot disabled.
- Legacy BIOS-only boot is not installed. It needs a BIOS boot sector and partition-table changes on the USB; this environment cannot write the drive's raw block device.
- The drive currently uses a FAT32 superfloppy layout without a partition table. UEFI firmware varies in whether it recognizes that layout; if the USB does not appear in F9, prepare a standard EFI System Partition when raw-device access is available.
- USB Personal Hotspot support is included in the live kernel/userspace, but iPhone-to-computer web access over that tether must be verified on the target iOS device. Wi-Fi on a shared local network is the fallback.
- The offline analysis writer remains source-grounded synthesis, not a generative language model.
